Steve Smith Fantasy Recap: Livin' Large With Cam Newton

The Carolina Panthers have struggled to string wins together, but they remain one of the most entertaining teams week in and week out due primarily to Cam Newton. While Newton has been making plays, wide receiver Steve Smith has stepped into the rejuvenation machine and knocked the clock back a few years. Smith continued his resurgent 2011 campaign with 100 receiving yards, a touchdown and 12 rushing yards.

It is easy to forget how awful the quarterbacks really were in recent years for Steve Smith. When Jimmy Clausen, Matt Moore and Jake Delhomme are high on that list, it is not a pretty sight. Some thought Smith had lost a step or two, but Cam Newton has brought it all back. Whether Smith never lost a step, or has simply found a renewed energy with Cam Newton, Smith has skyrocketed back into top five receiver status.

The Panthers have a bye this week and then host the Tennessee Titans in week ten. The Titans have been incredibly inconsistent this season and have struggled a bit against the pass. This could prove to be a particularly juice fantasy matchup for Steve Smith, Cam Newton and the Panthers.

Jonathan Stewart Fantasy: Panthers RB Has Another Disappointing Day

Jonathan Stewart turned in another frustrating day for the Carolina Panthers, rushing 13 times for 49 yards and catching two passes for 10 yards on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. In a season in which Steward has been anything but reliable, this was yet another example of why relying on his production is a recipe for fantasy disaster.

Stewart had 278 rushing yards and 210 receiving yards on the season with 2 touchdowns on the ground and zero in the air. Stewart was averaging 40 yards rushing and 30 yards receiving per game. Stewart's rushing yards were down nearly 15 yards per game from last season.

Stewart was ranked as the 24th ranked running back according to Yahoo! heading into his match up with the Minnesota Vikings.

Christian Ponder Fantasy: Effective, But Unspectacular

If Christian Ponder is your starting fantasy quarterback, you're probably pretty happy with his performance on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Ponder threw for 236 yards and a touchdown on 18 of 28 passing. Not a great day, but nothing to be too worried about either.

With the team struggling with Donovan McNabb under center, the Minnesota Vikings turned to Ponder as their full-time starter in Week 7 against the Green Bay Packers. In his limited appearances he has looked just like a rookie quarterback should, going 22-for-49 passing for 318 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Anybody considering Ponder for fantasy purposes must be in a deep two-QB league. Otherwise there really isn't any reason that an unproven rookie should be on your radar. Look for the Vikings to emphasize the running game while Ponder gets his feet wet.

VIDEO: Olindo Mare Ruins An Otherwise Nice Panthers Comeback

Cam Newton can do a lot of things well. One of them is not kicking a football. So, as much as Carolina Panthers fans probably would have liked to see the fate of Sunday's game resting on Newton, the responsibility fell to Olindo Mare. All he needed to do was hit a 31-yard field goal to send the game into overtime. Of course, he knocked it wide and Newton could do nothing about it.

As it was, the Panthers lost 24-21 and Newton's three-touchdown effort was for naught.

Cam Newton may have outplayed Christian Ponder, but it was Ponder's Vikings that got the victory in Carolina.

Cam Newton Fantasy: Panthers QB Turns In Another Solid Effort

Cam Newton has found adjusting to the NFL remarkably easy, it seems, as he posted another solid performance on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. The Carolina Panthers quarterback tossed three touchdowns with 290 yards passing, although it wasn't enough in a 24-21 loss.

Newton is the prohibitive favorite to take home rookie-of-the-year honors at season's end. He's the biggest reason Panthers fans have to tune in every week despite another ugly start, with over 2,100 yards passing through seven games.

It's Newton's running ability that makes him an especially valuable fantasy commodity, however. He has had at least one rushing touchdowns in all but one game this year, which in standard scoring leagues should be worth a couple more points than the passing variety. Newton was ranked No. 2 in Yahoo! Sports' fantasy quarterback rankings this week, going up against a soft Minnesota secondary.

Adrian Peterson Fantasy: Even On Off-Days, Vikings RB Shines

Another day, another monster fantasy performance from Adrian Peterson. The Minnesota Vikings running back scored a pair of touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing, and picked up more than 160 all-purpose yards. Peterson ended up rushing for 86 yards, which he supplemented with 76 receiving yards on five catches.

Peterson had 712 rushing yards and 49 receiving yards on the season with 8 touchdowns on the ground and zero in the air. Peterson was averaging 102 yards rushing and 7 yards receiving per game. Peterson's rushing yards were up nearly 20 yards per game from last season.

Peterson was ranked as the top ranked running back according to Yahoo! heading into his match up with the Carolina Panthers.

VIDEO: Steve Smith Slides Into The End Zone

Steve Smith has been having a monster season, heading into Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings with more than 800 yards receiving. The one thing he hasn't done much of, though, is score touchdowns, as he had just three at the start of action. Well, make it four, as Smith scored in the third quarter against to give the Carolina Panthers a 21-14 lead.

VIDEO: Cam Newton Tosses 40-Yard Touchdown to Greg Olsen

Cam Newton makes his share of mistakes, but the rookie continues to show that he's perfectly capable of overcoming them. The Carolina Panthers quarterback just threw his second touchdown of the day, a 40-yard strike to tight end Greg Olsen.

Newton also has 119 yards passing and the game is still quite early in the second quarter. On the pass to Olsen, Newton was able to convince the defense that he was looking to Steve Smith on the other side, and then find his tight end behind the coverage. His pass hit Olsen perfectly in stride.

Just to put a perfect little cherry on top of the play, Newton got the ball from Olsen and then gave it to a young fan in the stands. Seriously, is this guy too good to be true?

VIDEO: Percy Harvin Gets Into Slap Fight With Captain Munnerlyn

We all love a good fight, right? Well, Percy Harvin and Captain Munnerlyn got into a cut little tussle on the Carolina Panthers sideline. Of course, no flags were thrown, no one was hurt and they probably laughed about it afterward. It seems what happened is Harvin was a little overzealous in blocking Munnerlyn out of bounds and fighting ensued.

VIDEO: Steve Smith Makes Acrobatic Catch To Set Up Panthers' Touchdown

Steve Smith just continues to do amazing things. The Carolina Panthers wide receiver, who had more than 800 yards receiving heading into Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, made another spectacular catch to set up a touchdown.

Smith was able to adjust nicely on a slightly under thrown ball from Cam Newton and was originally ruled to have scored the touchdown. But replays correctly ruled him down at the 1.

It didn't end up making much difference, though, as the Panthers scored on the next play with Newton hitting tight end Jeremy Shockey in the back of the endzone.

VIDEO: Cam Newton Fumble Leads To Vikings Touchdown

Facing a Minnesota Vikings team at home, the Carolina Panthers surely figured this was a game they should win. Well, it didn't get off to such a hot start. Cam Newton fumbled on the Panthers' first play from scrimmage when he was hit from behind by EJ Henderson. Jared Allen then pounced on it, to give the Minnesota Vikings possession deep in Panthers territory.

The Vikings wasted little time making the Panthers pay. On their second play, Percy Harvin took a carry 10 yards to give the Vikings the early 7-0 advantage.

Adrian Peterson Status Update: Vikings RB With Play With Ankle Injury

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been dealing with an ankle injury, but he practiced in full on Thursday and Friday and is listed as probable on the injury report. With a change to rookie quarterback Christian Ponder, it's likely the Vikings feed Peterson the football more than in past weeks.

Peterson is going up against a Carolina Panthers defense that ranks in at 29th against the run and has allowed the must rushing touchdowns and runs of 20+ yards in the NFL. Peterson should be the best fantasy play at running back this week and you should have no worries about his ankle injury. Peterson is averaging over 100 yards per game and leads the NFL in rushing yards. He shouldn't have any problems this week.

Percy Harvin Questionable With Rib Injury

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin is listed as "Questionable" after missing most of this week's practices with a rib injury.

Harvin's rib issue landed him on the team's injury report beginning in Week 6. Listed as "Questionable" for that week's game against the Chicago Bears, Harvin caught a team-high seven passes for 78 yards, had one rushing attempt for five yards and returned two kickoffs for 48 yards in the 39-10 loss. Listed as "Probable" for last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers, Harvin had two receptions for 15 yards, two rushing attempts for eight yards and returned two kickoffs for 55 yards.

Harvin expects to play, saying it's just a matter of pain tolerance.

"Without getting into too many details, it's just basically like (a) hamstring," Harvin said via Tom Pelissero of "You can kind of feel it pulling, so it kind of makes me nervous at times. But other than that, it's just pain tolerance."

The Vikings released veteran wide receiver Bernard Berrian this week, but elevated 2011 seventh-round pick Stephen Burton from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. All five receivers on the roster, including Harvin, are expected to dress for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
