The
Oakland Raiders have confirmed that legendary owner Al Davis has passed away at the age of 82. Though his health was clearly in decline in recent years, it's still a shock to think of the Raiders and not have Al Davis in the picture.
Already the pro football world is offering their condolences to Raider Nation, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who released a statement on Davis' death.
Al Davis's passion for football and his influence on the game were extraordinary. He defined the Raiders and contributed to pro football at every level. The respect he commanded was evident in the way that people listened carefully every time he spoke. He is a true legend of the game. whose impact and legacy will forever be part of the NFL.
You'll be hearing the word "legend" quite a bit when talking about the death of Davis. He went from personal assistant to scout to head coach to AFL commissioner to team owner. He was one of the driving forces of merging the AFL and NFL and he had so many contributions to the game that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
