Didn't expect this one: Alex Smith headed to the bench in the fourth quarter with the game already out of reach. The surprise? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in a 41-3 hole, and Smith was solid throughout, completing 11 of 19 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. While it's not jaw-dropping, Smith managed the game and kept the offense churning, with plenty of help from the ground game.
And that ground game got going quickly. Frank Gore has 125 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Kendall Hunter, working in a change-of-pace role, has 65 yards on nine carries, including a 44-yarder. And Kaepernick completed his only pass of the day: an 11-yarder to setup an Anthony Dixon touchdown.
All in all, not a bad day for the Niners, who have completely shut down Tampa Bay. In the fourth, the Niners are all over the Bucs, 48-3.
