Josh Morgan's Injury Lands Him On Injured Reserve For 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers last week lost Josh Morgan to what was initially reported as an fractured ankle but head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated it was a broken leg at his Monday press conference.

On Wednesday, the 49ers opted to place Morgan on injured reserve, ending his 2011 season.

Morgan has 220 yards receiving and one touchdown this year. He's a solid blocking receiver, which could affect Frank Gore and the 49ers running game (which is really the strength of their team).

The 49ers signed Brett Swain in place of Morgan and they'll rely on Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker at tight end a little more, along with Ted Ginn out wide.

The team worked out a number of receivers this week, including free agents T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chris Chambers, instead opting to sign Swain.

49ers Sign Brett Swain, Invite Houshmandzadeh And Chambers For Tryout

The San Francisco 49ers lost wide receiver Josh Morgan late in the fourth quarter this weekend in their victory over Tampa Bay. Morgan was in the middle of his best game of the season with five catches for 75 yards and had established himself as the team's top wide receiver.

Without Morgan, the Niners need someone to fill the gap at receiver and decided to hold tryouts today in camp. Among those invited included T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chris Chambers as well as practice squad players Joe Hastings and John Matthews.

Out of everyone, the Niners ended up signing 26-year-old Brett Swain to a contract. The 6-1, 200 pound receiver played the last two seasons for the Packers, primarily on special teams He had six receptions for 72 yards last year for the Packers.

No word on whether or not the other receivers were picked up as well but we will update you if and when we hear.

Josh Morgan Injury: 49ers Wide Receiver Has Fractured Ankle, According To Report

At what price victory, the San Francisco 49ers are likely asking themselves right now. The 49ers lost wide receiver Josh Morgan late in the fourth quarter to an ankle injury. According to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, Morgan suffered a fractured right ankle when he was tackled with less than four minutes left in the game. There is no timetable for Morgan's return, but if his ankle is fractured, the rest of Morgan's season could be in jeopardy.

Morgan was having his best game of the season with five catches for 75 yards, establishing himself as the team's top wide receiver this fall. But now the 49ers will need to look elsewhere for picking up the slack.

With Braylon Edwards still a few weeks away from returning, the 49ers currently have just three healthy wide receivers on the roster: Michael Crabtree, Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams. Pyrrhus of Epirus can feel for the 49ers here.

Josh Morgan Injury: Status Unclear After 49ers WR Injures Ankle

The San Francisco 49ers may have dodged a bullet, but we won't know for sure until Josh Morgan's ankle injury is examined further. Late in the fourth quarter of the Niners' blowout win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Morgan went down with what appeared to be a gruesome ankle injury. He did not return, and all indications pointed to his ankle injury being a serious one.

But after the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh sounded optimistic about Morgan and his prognosis.

Jim Harbaugh indicates Joshua Morgan's ankle injury might not be as serious as it appeared, but nothing definitive right now.

Morgan led all receivers with five catches for 75 yards in the Niners' 48-3 win over the Bucs. With Braylon Edwards out with an injury, San Francisco can ill-afford to lose another weapon in the passing game, though the Niners' run game has looked solid with Frank Gore leading the way.
