Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman took to Twitter to defend his teammate Stevie Johnson at halftime of the Bills vs. Jets game on Sunday. Johnson provided one of the must-see highlights with his TD celebration (click for video) mocking Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes.
The celebration mocked Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub three years ago. The actions could be considered in bad taste and it's possible that Johnson will be issued a fine from the league.
If that happens, Merriman says he'll be there for his teammate. He tweeted the following:
Never tweet during the game but what @StevieJohnson13 did was disrespectful & not needed & should never happen in the #NFL so ill pay half the fine HA!
People need a sense of humor other than us being behind right now that celebration was funny #GoBills
Merriman could receive a fine himself for tweeting during the game. Last season, the NFL fined Chad Ochocinco $25,000 for in-game tweeting. However, as the New York Daily News points out, Merriman is on the injured reserve, and might not be subject to the same rule.
