The Seattle Seahawks have shut down wide receiver Sidney Rice for the season. The team announced today that Rice has been placed on the injured reserve list, according to Danny O'Neil at the Seattle Times. Rice suffered a concussion in a week 12 loss to the Redskins, his third concussion in the last 12 months.
Rice's injury history casts a long shadow over his NFL future. Three concussions is a very serious matter. He suffered a mild concussion in week 10. Rice finishes his season with 34 receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns in nine games.
Seattle signed Rice as a free agent during the offseason to a five-year, $41 million contract with $18.5 million in guaranteed money. A number of other suitors were scared off by Rice's injury history - he played just six games in 2010 because of a hip injury - and contract demands.
