The San Francisco 49ers will travel to play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday after locking up the NFC West title last week. The Cardinals are looking to win their fifth game in the last six weeks.
Ostensibly, there won't be much on the line when the Arizona Cardinals host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The Niners clinched the NFC West with a win last Sunday over the St. Louis Rams. The Cardinals are technically still in the playoff hunt at 5-7, though with just four weeks left in the season they will need some help to secure a wild card spot.
There is still the matter of a first-round bye for the 49ers, however, so don't expect them to let off the gas just yet. The team is still playing solid football, with a Thanksgiving loss to a tough Baltimore Ravens club being the team's only blemish since Week 2. Frank Gore set a franchise record for career rushing yards during last week's blanking of the St. Louis Rams, a game in which the much-maligned Alex Smith completed 73.9 percent of his passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cardinals have looked better of late, winning four out of their last five games to provide a glimmer of hope for the season. Their lone loss in that span came just three weeks ago against the Niners, however. John Skelton went just for 6-for-19 passing in that game before being benched in the fourth quarter for Richard Bartel. Luckily for the Cardinal, Kevin Kolb should make his second straight start Sunday after missing four weeks with turf toe.
