Devin Hester Blames Two-Year Touchdown Drought On His Shoes

Devin Hester will go down as the best return man in NFL history but I bet a lot of people won't remember that he had a two-year touchdown return drought earlier in his career. Hester recorded a record 11 combined punt and kick return touchdowns in his first two seasons in the league and then zero in his next two seasons. The last two years he's regained his stride returning a combined six punts and kicks back.

SB Nation Chicago had a chance to visit with Hester at a Nike event recently and he blamed that two-year touchdown drought on...shoes.

Star-divide

After his second season, Hester said his contract with Nike was up and he decided to sign with Under Armour because they offered him more money. Hester said the Under Armour shoes were terrible, and that his feet would hurt just walking out to the field. For the two years Hester wore Under Armour shoes, he had exactly zero special teams returns for touchdowns. The next year he switched back to Nike, and immediately regained his swagger. Hester had three returns last season and has three more this season. Hester insinuated the switch to Under Armour shoes put a dip in his production.
Obviously you can say this is a Nike guy talking about the competitor but the numbers make you wonder. Check out the complete background of the story over at SB Nation Chicago.
