Cam Newton has essentially written Steve Grogran out of the NFL record book. The Carolina Panthers quarterback scored his 13th rushing touchdown of the season, moving him one past the record Grogan set for quarterbacks in 1976. It was also Newton's third rushing touchdown of the game and gave the Panthers a 38-12 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
It has been quite a rookie year for Newton, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. The product of Auburn has now thrown for nearly 3,300 yards and has 26 combined rushing and passing touchdowns through 12 games.
While Grogan was known almost exclusively for his ability to run the ball, Newton has proven to be a much more advanced passer, at least early in his career. In the six seasons that Grogan made at least 12 starts, he threw more touchdowns than interceptions just twice and threw for at least 3,000 yards just once.
