NFL Scores Week 13: Panthers Vs. Buccaneers, Cam Newton Sets QB Rushing TD Record

Stay connected with SB Nation

Cam Newton rushed for three touchdowns and threw one more to lead the Carolina Panthers (4-8) to a 38-19 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-8) on Sunday. His three rushing touchdowns gave him 13 for the season, one more than Steve Grogan's old record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a season that he set in 1976. All three of Newton's touchdowns were from 1 yard out.

Interestingly enough, Newton's other statistics were not particularly eye popping. The No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft rushed for 54 yards and was 12 of 21 for 204 yards passing. But it was plenty in this game, as the Panthers defense did a good job of putting the offense in strong position. The Panthers scored on all five of their red-zone possessions.

The Bucs were held to just 285 yards of total offense and just 78 yards rushing. The Panthers limited Josh Johnson, who got his first start of the season, to 227 yards passing.
