The Jaguars embarrassment is Ryan Mathews gain. The Chargers running back scored on a 31-yard touchdown scamper on the first play from scrimmage after Jacksonville botched the snap on a field goal attempt for a loss of about 40 yards. Mathews run gave the Chargers a 38-14 lead in the fourth quarter.
Here's video of the run:
It's a nice run. Mathews does a good job of bouncing outside and the Jaguars cannot tackle or pursue along proper angles. Good football is nice to watch. BUT: the botched field goal attempt is the real treat.
Here is the NFL.com play-by-play transcription of the play:
4-12-SD 30(11:07) (Field Goal formation) N.Harris Aborted. J.Cain FUMBLES at SD 30, recovered by JAC-N.Harris at JAC 30. N.Harris to JAC 31 for 1 yard (A.Garay).
It's time for the Benny Hill theme song. The bungled play, in animated GIF form:

Philip Rivers is picking the thin Jaguars secondary apart. After throwing two touchdowns in just over a minute to end the first half, the San Diego quarterback opened the third quarter with his third TD pass. The Chargers now lead by a score of 31-14 on Monday Night Football.
Rivers sold the Jags with good use of the play-action, and found Malcom Floyd for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Here's video of that touchdown:
Floyd is the third different Chargers receiver with a touchdown on Monday. Rivers has had success going deep, completing seven of eight throws longer than 20 yards for 203 total yards. Check out Rivers' pass chart via ESPN:

The Jaguars trail the Chargers 31-14 after two quarters and change. The much-maligned Philip Rivers has been stellar for San Diego, throwing for three touchdowns and 283 yards. If the Jags are going to figure out a way to slow him down the rest of the game, they'll have to do so without defensive end John Chick, who won't return after suffering a right knee injury.
Chick injured himself late in the second quarter, falling back awkwardly after failing to turn the corner against Chargers left tackle Jared Gaither. As you can see in the video below, he immediately clutched his knee and was eventually carted to the locker room.
Chick went undrafted out of Utah State in 2006, and has spent the last several years bouncing between the CFL and NFL practice squads before finally making an NFL active roster this season. In 10 games for the Jaguars, he's collected eight tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Philip Rivers injected some offense and excitement into Monday Night Football, throwing for two touchdowns in just more than a minute to end the first half against the Jaguars. The two scores gave the Chargers a 24-14 lead heading into the locker room.
So far, Rivers has thrown for two touchdowns and more than 200 yards while completing better than 75 percent of his passes. In other words: He's been the *good* Philip Rivers from previous seasons.
Rivers put the Chargers on top with a 22-yard strike to Vincent Brown. Here's the video of that first touchdown pass:
Then, after a Blaine Gabbert interception, Rivers extended the Chargers lead before the half, finding another Vincent -- Vincent Jackson -- for a 35-yard score. Here's video of that touchdown:
On the other side of the ball, Maurice Jones-Drew is having a strong night for the Jags, collecting almost 100 total yards in the first half. Jones-Drew scored a rushing touchdown and set up another Jacksonville score with a 48-yard gain on a shovel pass. Yup, we have that video, too:

The Jacksonville Jaguars defense was torn up on the San Diego Chargers' first drive of the game, but they've held strong since then. San Diego added a field goal on their second drive, but that came after a solid stand by the home team. Finally, the Jags' offense has helped them out with a touchdown in the second quarter, cutting the Chargers' lead to 10-7 halfway through the second quarter.
Maurice Jones-Drew was the scorer, getting it done with his hands instead of on the ground. Blaine Gabbert, who has just one incompletion in this game, delivered the simple short pass on the nine-yard score. Here's the video.
These teams are having poor seasons thus far, but this game has been surprisingly well-played in the early going. Both offenses have made some decent plays, but the defenses are avoiding mistakes as well. Who could have guessed?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are dealing with a devastating number of injuries to their secondary and it showed on the San Diego Chargers' first draw, as the Bolts marched down the field to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Philip Rivers looked solid on the drive, but he got a little bit of help. Antonio Gates made a spectacular catch to get the drive off to a great start, bailing out Rivers, who threw into double coverage.
Mike Tolbert finished off the drive for the Chargers with a 13-yard touchdown run. It was Tolbert's only run on the 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. Ryan Mathews carried the ball four times for 31 yards.
Jacksonville had the first possession and had to punt after Maurice Jones-Drew was stuffed on 3rd and 2, mostly thanks to a terrible play call. It's going to take some seriously awful (and characteristic) fail from Rivers and Norv Turner to alter this game's current course.
And, uh, here's a GIF of Mike Tolbert doing ... something.
