The cover boy of the 2012 Madden video game will be...decided by a vote. Indeed, the player on the Madden '12 cover will come down to a vote. The folks at Madden have released an NCAA tournament-style bracket where fans can vote on the next player on the cover of Madden '12.
There are two brackets with seeds 1-16 on each side. The top seeds in the two brackets are Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Click here to see the entire bracket.
Assuming the seeds are based on who Madden feels is most likely to win, I'm surprised at a few of the seeds. For example, Patriots RB Danny Woodhead is a 4-seed -- I thought he'd be lower than that. Broncos QB Tim Tebow is an 11-seed and I figured with his popularity he'd be higher than that.
Each team is represented on the list and not every team has a superstar so there are some weird candidates. Topping that list would be Panthers OT Jordan Gross. Indeed, the Panthers candidate for the Madden '12 cover is an offensive tackle. At least Dolphins OT Jake Long, who is Miami's candidate, was a No. 1 pick. The Seahawks candidate? Their fans or, as Madden calls it, "The 12th man."
Here's how the voting breaks down:
- Opening Round: March 21-27
- Second Round: March 28-April 3
- Third Round: April 4-10
- Semifinals: April 11-17
- Finals: April 18-25
The cover will be announced on April 26th on ESPN.
The good news is that the Madden series will go on with or without an NFL lockout. Even better news is that the candidates for the cover in 2012 don't include Roger Goodell or DeMaurice Smith.
