The deadline for NFL owners and NFL Players Association to extend the current deadline for negotiating a new CBA is coming quickly. The two sides continue to talk in Washington D.C. along with a federal mediator and the next step will either be the union filing for decertification or the two sides agreeing to an extension.
Jason La Canfora of NFL Network tweets an extension is still possible:
Discussions ongoing in DC, nothing official yet, but momentum growing for "stopping the clock." Decision looming by 5:30. Sides talking.
Again, "stopping the clock" is the best case scenario for everyone involved right now. This would extend the deadline and avoid the NFLPA having to take the step of decertification. Once they take that step, this turns into a court battle.
According to various reports, the NFLPA will need to make their decertification intentions known by Thursday afternoon.
