Thomas Dimitroff Signs Extension With Atlanta Falcons

Fresh off a third consecutive winning season for the first time in team history -- and, in fact, the first consecutive winning seasons ever -- the Atlanta Falcons have signed General Manager Thomas Dimitroff to a multi-year contract extension. The move locks up a former member of the Patriots front office who has won Sporting News' Executive of the Year honor twice in three seasons in Atlanta.

Dimitroff has, by all accounts, been a critical piece in the effort to rebuild the Falcons after the twin debacles of the Michael Vick dogfighting arrest and the 13-game tenure of former Louisville head coach (and current Arkansas boss) Bobby Petrino. He drafted Matt Ryan (among others) and signed key free agents like Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez, all of whom helped power Atlanta in its run to the NFC South title last year. And he was responsible for bringing in Mike Smith, a head coach that wasn't the biggest name on the market at the time but was the right fit.

Atlanta has yet to win a playoff game under Smith or Dimitroff, but it's still been a steady climb upward from where they inherited the team. And for Falcons fans, just being relevant for an extended period of time is improvement enough -- at least for now.
