Brandon Marshall Diagnosed With Borderline Personality Disorder

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall is crediting an offseason diagnosis and treatment for borderline personality disorder with saving his life, writes Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel.

"By no means am I all healed or fixed, but it's like a light bulbs been turned on in my dark room," Marshall said of the diagnosis.

Multiple arrests and on-field outbursts dating back to his days at Central Florida led to years of therapy and counseling sessions that were of little to no help to Marshall. At the recommendation of Dolphins teammate Ricky Williams, Marshall began treatment at McLean Hospital in Boston.

Marshall underwent sessions over the phone and occasional in-person visits, but following an altercation with his wife, Marshall stepped up his treatments. Marshall spent nearly three months in the Boston area, undergoing several hours of meetings each day with clinicians and fellow BPD patients learning how to process his emotions.

Marshall tells Kelly that he hopes to become the face of BPD.

"Brandon's doing an extraordinary job of coming forth," said Jody O'Malley, Marshall's case manager at McLean. "He's using what he's learned to touch other people's lives who are dramatically impacted by loved ones who have borderline personality disorder."

Brandon Marshall Talks To Police About April Stabbing Incident

Over two months later, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall has finally talked with police about an alleged stabbing incident by his wife. According to Marshall's lawyer:

"He indeed appeared at the Broward state attorney's office and gave a statement to investigators," Ishoy wrote. "The investigation continues."

Marshall talked with police after a subpoena had been issued in his name. What had held up Marshall's statement was a no-contact order placed on his wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall. It had been put in place after the alleged April 22 incident in which she stabbed him in the stomach with a kitchen knife.

As has been noted previously, Marshall originally lied about how he suffered the wound, claiming he fell on a vase. When he was with the Denver Broncos, Marshall had claimed an arm injury occurred after he slipped on a McDonald's wrapper and went into a TV. He later changed his story to having wrestled with his brother at the time of the incident.

Dolphins Don't Plan To Release Brandon Marshall After Stabbing Incident

The Miami Dolphins and the rest of the NFL world were stunned over the weekend when news surfaced early on Saturday morning that WR  Brandon Marshall had been stabbed and his wife had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Marshall is the victim in this instance but, based on his past, some Dolphins players weren't surprised trouble found Marshall, writes Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Despite the weekend, incident, the Dolphins have no plans to release Marshall if/when the lockout is lifted.

The Dolphins, at this time, have no intention to break ties with Marshall, a source said Saturday. Miami reportedly has the option to break away from Marshall by not paying a $3 million option bonus that guarantees the player's salary through 2012.

They have an out if they want it but, according to report, they won't take it. Even if the Dolphins wanted to release Marshall, it would be a difficult pill to swallow. They have invested in him a pair of second round picks, never mind the $50 million contract.

It's a tough situation for all parties involved. The Dolphins hope it's the last tough situation they have with Marshall.

Brandon Marshall's Statement On Stabbing Similar To Previous Incident

Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall was stabbed on Friday and taken to an area hospital where surgery was performed. He is expected to be OK in two to three weeks, according to reports.

In the police report, Marshall claimed he fell on a vase. Of course we now know that's not the truth. His wife has already admitted that she stabbed him, claiming it was out of self defense, and she has been jailed.

Details of the incident are still coming in but I thought one detail -- Marshall claiming he fell on a vase -- sounded familiar.

That's because, three years ago, Marshall had surgery on his right arm after claiming he slipped on a McDonald's wrapper and put his arm through the TV. Like this incident, his initial claim wasn't truthful. Marshall later took back what he said and admitted he was wrestling with his brother when his arm went through the TV and that he didn't slip on a McDonald's wrapper.

The details are different but Marshall's less-than-truthful statement sounds familiar.

Brandon Marshall Stabbing Police Report

As everyone knows by now, Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall was stabbed by his wife on Friday and later underwent surgery. He is expected to be OK in two to three weeks according to his representatives.

The police report has been obtained by the Miami Herald confirming that his wife has been charged with aggravated battery/deadly weapon in a domestic violence case.

Here is the police's description of the situation in the report. Marshall is the victim and his wife is the defendant in the report.

On April 22nd, 2011, the above listed defendant did unlawfully and intentionally arm herself with a kitchen knife and stab the victim in the abdomen. The victim and defendant have ben married for approximately one year and have been involved as a couple for approximately two and one half years and have no children together. The victim provided sworn testimony advising that he slipped and ell onto a broken glass vase; however, the area of where the vase was broken indicated no blood within the immediate area  to substantiate his claim. However, the defendant was read Miranda on scene wherein post Miranda she stated she stabbed the victim out of self defense. Photographs were taken of the scene and of the victim. Both the victim and defendant provided scant information regarding the incident itself; however, based upon the post Miranda statement and the injuries to the victim, the defendant was taken into custody for the above listed charge.

Brandon Marshall, Wife Have Different Stories On Stabbing

The case of the Brandon Marshall stabbing has taken a twist.

The facts are that Marshall was stabbed on Friday night and taken to an area hospital where doctors performed surgery. His wife has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The police report reveals each side has a different take on what happened.

Per multiple accounts of the police report via Twitter, Marshall claimed he fell on a vase and wasn't stabbed. His wife, though, has admitted that she stabbed him -- and claims it was in self defense.

Someone isn't telling the truth and the police will be interested in finding out what the real story is.

Someone else who will be interested in finding out the whole story is NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Though the lockout is in place, Goodell says players will be held accountable for whatever legal trouble they get into -- lockout or not.

Dolphins Aware Of Brandon Marshall Stabbing; NFL Lockout Prohibits Contact

The Miami Dolphins traded for WR Brandon Marshall last year and gave him a new $50 million contract so when the news came down that Marshall was stabbed by his wife, it would be natural for the Dolphins to investigate and try to speak with Marshall lending whatever support they can.

Unfortunately, that can't communicate with him. Even with an incident like this, the NFL lockout prohibits teams from speaking with players. That's the gist of the statement Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene released on Saturday morning:

"We are aware of the report. And our thoughts are with Brandon at this time. We will look into the matter. But because we are not allowed to have any contact with any of our players, we will refrain from making any further comment."

Yet another downside to the NFL lockout: the Dolphins $50 million investment is stabbed and they can't check on him. They can send messages of support but that's about it.

One caveat is that the team doctor can apparently talk to him, Peter King reports. Although I'm sure there are limits on the amount and type of contact they can have.

Update

Brandon Marshall Expected To Be Discharged From Hospital Saturday After Stabbing

In the hours after Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall was stabbed, it now appears that his injuries, thankfully, are relatively minor. The NFL network's Jason La Canfora tweets:

Brandon Marshall will be discharged from hospital in about an hour, according to his agent, Kennard McGuire. Full recovery in 2-3 weeks...

Given the NFL lockout in place, players and team officials are largely prohibited from contacting one another. However, in this special case, an NFL spokesman was quoted by NFL.com as saying that this incident is an exception.

"The team doctor can see him. The trainer and team doctor can consult with his other doctors. The team can send well wishes or other types of appropriate expressions of support."

Brandon Marshall Stabbing Won't Result In Long-Term Damage

As many people know by now, Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall was stabbed with a knife on Friday night and taken to an area hospital. There aren't many details available right but but Marshall's wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, has been arrested, according to reports.

The good news is that the stabbing isn't expected to be a long-term injury. Via ESPN:

No vital organs were pierced in the incident, and doctors have told him that Marshall will be OK in two to three weeks, sources said.

From a football standpoint, this won't be affecting him. He's one of the best young receivers in the game so I'm thrilled there won't be any long-term damage.

It does, though, make me think about the Darrent Williams shooting on New Years a few years ago. A couple weeks ago SI.com had a very in-depth look at that night and the story noted that Marshall was very "shaken" by the incident and still is to this day. I'm not sure what kind of connection you can draw between this event and that night, but it's probably not helping Marshall's state of mind.

Brandon Marshall Stabbed, In Intensive Care, According To Report; Wife In Custody

Brandon Marshall was stabbed Friday and is in intensive care in a Miami hospital, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Marshall's wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, was arrested Friday on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Schefter reports that while Marshall's wound were serious enough to require surgery, he is expected to recover within a matter of weeks. Marshall was traded to the Miami Dolphins a year ago, after four seasons and two Pro Bowl selections with the Denver Broncos.

Marshall had runs of trouble in Denver, and has been arrested for DUI, domestic abuse and battery in the past. It is unclear what led to this incident, and it has yet to be confirmed Nogami-Marshall's arrest is related to Marshall's injury. Marshall is one of the most physically talented wide receivers in the NFL, but wore out his welcome in Denver. After being traded to Dolphins last April, he signed a four-year, $47.5 million contract.
