Donovan McNabb elected not to get in the mix with Bernard Hopkins after the prize-fighter hurled the same barbs McNabb has been hearing for ages. To recap, Hopkins attacked McNabb's race, saying he "has a suntan. That's all." It was stupid, tired and a blatant, albeit random, publicity grab. And we all thought that would be the end of it.
Enter McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith. In a response to Hopkins, Smith released the following statement, which applies to any of the various attacks on McNabb we've seen throughout the years.
"It perpetuates a maliciously inaccurate stereotype that insinuates those African-Americans who have access to a wider variety of resources are somehow culturally different than their brethren," Fletcher Smith said.
And his agent has a point. For whatever reason, and it may be because of his upbringing, McNabb has taken a ridiculous amount of heat. If this stops it, great. But, in all likelihood, Hopkins will continue his war of words, disregarding the statement and targeting McNabb for whatever reason.
