If NFL Season Is Canceled, What Happens To Indianapolis' Super Bowl?

The NFL has done a number of number of things to prepare for the chance that the 2011-12 season is delayed including tweaks to the schedule that would allow for up to three regular season games to be canceled without affecting the rest of the year, possibly eliminating the one of the two weeks between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, and even pushing the Super Bowl back a week.

Indianapolis is the host of the 2012 Super Bowl and, if a lockout compromises the game, they're expected to get another one.

"I do feel strongly that we made a commitment to the city of Indianapolis,'' NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told Colts season ticket holders on a conference call. "We look forward to being there. We look forward to playing in Indianapolis and we'll stand behind that commitment.''

The Indy Star writes that it's "believed" that, if the season is canceled, Indianapolis would get the next open spot. New Orleans has the 2013 game, New Jersey has the 2014 game and the 2015 game is open, which could go to Indy.

That said, the season isn't expected to be canceled completely, even with the lockout. The Super Bowl is such an economic boon to the city that it would be devastating to prepare for it over the years and then have it delayed another several years.
