Vikings Confirm Donovan McNabb Is The Starter

QB Donovan McNabb and Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier made one thing clear in their initial comments to the media -- McNabb is the starter in Minnesota.

That was pretty clear whenMcNabb said it:

"When you trade for a guy who has been a starter for 12 years, you're not bringing him in here to be a backup," McNabb said. "You're bringing him in here to win now."

And when Frazier said it:

"We've signed him hoping he's going to be our starting quarterback barring some unforeseen circumstances," Frazier said. "He looks great. He's everything I thought he would be in our conversations and I fully expect him to go out and lead our football team to the 2011 season."

That was pretty obvious when they made the trade. McNabb is 34 years old so I could see a situation where he plays in Minnesota for 2-3 years and QB Christian Ponder, the Vikings first round pick, will be ready to move into the job. At least that's the way things would ideally work.

So McNabb is your starter in Minnesota. No surprise.

Donovan McNabb Has Been Traded From Redskins To Vikings, According To Report

Donovan NcNabb's trade to the Minnesota Vikings is complete and will be officially announced on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It now appears that McNabb and the Vikings have restructured his contract to avoid the big bonus he was due at the start of the season.

The Washington Redskins will receive a 2012 sixth-round NFL Draft pick and a conditional 2013 sixth-round NFL Draft pick in return for the quarterback.

McNabb will now be the starter for the Vikings and help mentor 2011 first-round draft pick Christian Ponder. The rookie was in line to be the opening game quarterback, but now he will have time to grow into the Vikings' quarterback of the future. Joe Webb will slot in as the No. 3 quarterback on the roster.

Donovan McNabb Trade To Vikings Getting Closer

Reports have been surfacing that the Washington Redskins are nearing a trade that would send QB Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings. Reportedly, the two sides have agreed on compensation -- sixth round pick in 2012 and a sixth round pick in 2013 -- with the only hang-up coming from McNabb's contract.

He's due a big bonus the day after the season starts and will need to restructure that for any trade to take place. According to the latest from ESPN, the two sides have a "preliminary agreement" in place.

The compensation issues that were one of the stumbling blocks to the trade appear to be resolved. The one sticking point now appears to be that McNabb was concerned Tuesday night about how the Vikings' side of the situation was handled.

We're not sure what McNabb's concern is. Standing in the way of a starting job is former sixth round pick QB Joe Webb and rookie QB Christian Ponder. He would have a solid shot of earning the starting job there so it appears Minnesota may be his best option right now.

The two sides can agree to trades this week but they can't sign new contracts until Friday night.

On Donovan McNabb Trade, Christian Ponder Says He's Excited

The reports came down on Tuesday evening -- the Minnesota Vikings were making a run at QB Donovan McNabb. According to a variety of reports, the Vikings and Redskins have a deal in place that would send McNabb to Minnesota. The move, however, is contingent on McNabb re-working his contract, which pays him a big bonus the day after the season starts.

The Vikings used their first round pick on QB Christian Ponder this year so McNabb will be a stop-gap in Minnesota. Ponder, for his part, tweeted on Wednesday morning that he's ready for McNabb to come.

Excited to have McNabb join. Will learn a lot from a Pro Bowler. But that doesn't mean I'm not still fighting to start week 1!

Neither player has worked with the coaching staff so I suppose they both have a legitimate shot at the starting job. In the long run, though, this will be Ponder's team.

Minnesota was rumored to be interested in McNabb last year before he was traded to the Redskins. That was back when McNabb was worth a second or third round pick. After a less-than-impressive showing in Washington, the McNabb to Minnesota trade will involve only a sixth round pick in 2012 and a conditional sixth rounder in 2013.

Donovan McNabb Conditionally Traded To Minnesota Vikings, According To Report

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed in principle to trade for Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, according to reports. Washington is set to receive a 2012 sixth round pick and a possible 2013 sixth round pick contingent on McNabb's performance. The deal is not yet finalized, and is reliant on 34-year old veteran agreeing to a substantial pay cut.

McNabb has been named to six Pro Bowls since being drafted with the second pick of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. In his 11 seasons with the team, the Chicago-native led the Eagles to five NFC Championship Games and an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX.

After enduring a significant falling-out with Philadelphia during the 2010 offseason, McNabb was dealt to hated division rival, the Washington Redskins. He started the first 13 games of the season until his increasingly tumultuous relationship with coach Mike Shanahan led to an extremely public benching.

McNabb lands on a Minnesota team without a clear starter at the quarterback position, joining first round pick Christian Ponder and second-year youngster Joe Webb. Longtime Viking Tavaris Jackson signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday.

Donovan McNabb-To-Vikings Trade Talks Not All That Far Along, Counters PFT

You have to love the chaotic nature of this post-lockout free agency. Packing months of rumors into a few days is always entertaining stuff. Of course, it also results in a truckload of premature reports, as is the case here with Donovan McNabb.

Earlier today Adam Schefter constructed the perfect rumorannouncing that the Vikings had inquired about trading for McNabb. Jason La Canfora then raised the stakes, reporting that "paramaters of a deal" were already in place, and all that remained was for McNabb to restructure his contract.

Now new reports are stating that the previous reports may have been a bit hasty. Per ProFootballTalk.com:

A source with knowledge of the discussions tells us that, while a trade may indeed happen, the report of a deal being in place between the Vikings and Redskins is premature. Per the source, no agreement has been reached on the compensation the Redskins would receive.

Vikings, Redskins Talk Donovan McNabb Trade, Says Adam Schefter

David Allen Coe once critiqued a fellow songwriter's attempt to write the perfect country-western song by citing its lack of mamas, trains or drunkenness. Your NFL free agency rumor, likewise, is not the perfect NFL free agency rumor, as it does not include the Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings and Donovan McNabb.

Adam Schefter, however, has constructed the perfect rumor. Schefter says the Vikings have inquired about putting together a trade for McNabb. Jason La Canfora adds that the two teams have actually put the "paramaters of a deal" in place, but financials have presented a stumbling block.

Schefter adds that the Vikes are one of "a few teams" to ask about McNabb, but don't spoil this. There are no two teams you'd sooner expect to be involved in this trade. There's no player short of Brett Favre himself more likely to be involved. This is the perfect rumor.
