DeAngelo Williams Gets Five-Year Deal From Panthers, According To Report
RB DeAngelo Williams started his NFL career five years ago in Carolina and now he'll be there for another five years. According to NFL Network's Michael Lombardi, the Carolina Panthers have re-signed Williams to a five-year contract worth $43 million and $21 million guaranteed.
Like very deal reported this week, this won't become official until Friday night when players are permitted to actually sign contracts.
The Panthers are ponying up some big-time cash to retain some of their own free agents. They already signed DE Charles Johnson to a reported $76 million contract and now Williams gets his.
Williams is clearly a major part of the Panthers offense. In 2008, he rushed for over 1,500 yards and lead the league in rushing touchdowns. The following year, he again eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark. His 2010 season ended early after suffering a foot injury as he recorded a career-low 361 rushing yards in just six games.
Signing running backs to long-term deals is always tricky because the life of a running back is so short. The Panthers will need to count on Williams staying productive for at least a couple years on his five-year deal.
