Roy Williams Expected To Sign With Chicago Bears, According To Report

Roy Williams, who was officially released by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, appears to have found a new home with the Chicago Bears:

#Bears are expected to sign WR Roy Williams, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys, according to league source.

That Williams could eventually sign with the Bears comes as no surprise, since the best years of Williams' career came under Mike Martz with the Detroit Lions. Martz is now with the Bears, as is wide receivers coach Darryl Drake, who worked with Williams at the University of Texas. The Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears want a tall receiver, particularly given the departure of tight end Greg Olsen

Still, it remains to be seen how successful this signing will be. Williams is now 29 and hasn't had an 800-yard season since 2007. Neither of his full seasons with the Cowboys were particularly productive, leading to his release. This is a worthwhile gamble for the Bears and a good decision for Williams, given his ties to Martz, but that doesn't make it likely to work out.
