The Giants will make the trip south to North Carolina to face off against the Panthers in week one of the 2011 NFL preseason schedule on Saturday night at 8 p.m. Eli Manning will lead a veteran offense on the field against the Panthers' young defensive line and try to prove to themselves that they won't miss wide receiver Steve Smith, who was lost to free agency. On the defensive side of the ball, Giants fans may be able to see a larger chunk of last year's first-round pick, Jason Pierre-Paul, at defensive end as their usual starter, disgruntled Osi Umenyiora, is still holding out.
However, there's not a lot that I could possibly say about the Giants that could be more interesting than Panther's rookie quarterback Cam Newton. For the first time, Panther fans and non-Panther fans will be able to get a glimpse of the first overall pick from the 2011 NFL draft. Was it a good pick or was it a terrible mistake? Saturday night we'll be able to begin answering those questions. Of course Newton is second on the depth chart after Jimmy Clausen, but he's still sure to be on the field for a large chunk of time.
