The Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers renew their semi-annual preseason rivalry at University of Phoenix Stadium on Saturday night. Both teams enter the crucial third preseason game with identical 1-1 records.
For the Cardinals, this will be the first of back-to-back home preseason games, giving Cardinals fans their first look at newly acquired quarterback Kevin Kolb. The Cardinals' first-team offense is expected to play into the third quarter, with head coach Ken Whisenhunt looking to work on the two-minute offense and identify a No. 2 running back behind starter Beanie Wells in the wake of the Ryan Williams injury.
Arizona's defense, which is playing without an injured Adrian Wilson (biceps), will face a first-team Chargers offense that is clicking, with quarterback Philip Rivers (13-of-17, 179 yards, two touchdowns) and wide receiver Vincent Jackson in mid-season form.
The Cardinals will be facing a Chargers defense that ranked No. 1 in total defense and No. 1 against the pass in 2010. The Chargers solidified the defense this offseason, using a first-round pick on defensive lineman Corey Liuget, signing safety and former Defensive Payer of the Year Bob Sanders, and re-signing safety Eric Weddle to a five-year, $40 million contract.
If there is an area of concern for the Chargers defense it's at inside linebacker. Kevin Burnett and Brandon Siler have moved on, and veteran Stephen Cooper is attempting to play through a torn biceps tendon. Veteran Takeo Spikes was added in the offseason to play next to recent draft choices Donald Butler and Jonas Mouton.
