Eagles Agree To Terms With Anthony Hargrove, Former Saints DT

Injuries to Mike Patterson and Trevor Laws prompted the Philadelphia Eagles to sign free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove.

Free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles, Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune reports.

The 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive end has spent the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, returning from a one-year suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy to start six of 16 games for the Saints during their Super Bowl-winning season of 2009. Hargrove totaled 42 tackles and five quarterback sacks in 2009 before dipping to just 29 tackles and a quarterback sack in 14 games off the bench in 2010.

Hargrove, who played both end and tackle for the Saints, had become expendable in New Orleans after the selection of defensive end Cameron Jordan in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft and the free agent additions of Shaun Rogers, Aubrayo Franklin and Turk McBride.

The Eagles have been active in acquiring players over the last week, signing cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive linemen Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, and trading for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Signing Hargrove, as well as the reported signing of Derek Landri, were done out of necessity.

Eagles defensive tackle Trevor Laws was carted off the practice field this morning with a knee injury, and a few minutes later, defensive tackle Mike Patterson suffered convulsions on the field and was transported to a local hospital. Patterson was alert and stable, but will spend the night in the hospital for observation.
