The injury to RB Mikel Leshoure is as a bad as we thought it could be -- torn Achilles' tendon. Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has already announced that Leshoure will miss the entire 2011-12 season which is about as disappointing news as you can get for Lions fans.
I noted that losing Leshoure was a major blow to the Lions and SB Nation's Pride of Detroit agrees calling it a "terrible" situation.
There's no spinning this news. It's a huge blow to the Lions' offense. While Jahvid Best is a solid running back, Leshoure was expected to bring some added explosiveness to the backfield. All of the reports about his play during camp so far have been very positive, and to lose him for the year before a game is even played is a terrible thing.
I'm not a Lions fan but they're the type of team I was rooting for in 2011 because, after all they've been through the last two decades, it finally appeared they were turning the corner and making a legitimate run at the playoffs.
That can certainly still happen but the road just got a little tougher.

Detroit Lions RB Mikel Leshoure was carted away from training camp on Monday morning and I was hoping it was just for precautionary reasons and that Leshoure wasn't seriously injured.
Unfortunately, I was wrong. Leshoure suffered a torn Achilles' tendon, according to head coach Jim Schwartz, and he's out for the season.
It's a tough blow for the Lions, who planned to use Leshoure as a complement to the smaller RB Jahvid Best. The Lions traded up to draft Leshoure in the 2011 NFL draft so he's already suffered a season ending injury in less than two weeks of training camp.
The Lions are also missing DT Nick Fairley, who is out with an injury, and they got back WR Titus Young, who had been out the previous week.
Tearing an Achilles is a serious injury and, while players have come back from it before, it's no guarantee they come back the same. The key for Leshoure now is to get the surgery done and start rehabbing away to prepare for the 2012 season.
