Both the Steelers and Panthers will be looking at their quarterback positions in the final preseason game.
The Panthers will give No. 1 pick Cam Newton a chance to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final preseason game and he could earn the chance to open the season as the No. 1 quarterback. Jimmy Clausen, a first-round pick a year ago, is currently nursing a lege injury and Derek Anderson has been taking reps with the second team. Newton has completed 21 of 52 passes for 275 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions so far this preseason.
The Steelers, too, will be looking at the quarterback position on Thursday. With Byron Leftwich breaking his arm last week, that opened the door for Charlie Batch or Dennis Dixon to earn the chance to back up Ben Roethlisberger. The two quarterbacks are at different ends of their careers, with the 36-year-old Batch hoping to squeeze out a few more years and the 25-year-old Dixon trying to gain a foothold in the team's final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.
Neither of them have played particularly well during the preseason, but they've also been paired mostly with third and fourth stringers. Dixon has completed just 10 of 24 passes for 132 yards with an interception. Batch has gone just 2 of 4 for 16 yards, but does have the benefit of 12 NFL seasons.
