NFL Preseason Scores From All 15 Thursday Night Games

The 2011 NFL preseason schedule is almost over. We had 15 games on Thursday night and one game still to come on Friday night.

The final preseason game is usually one in which the starters play for a series or two, at most, and the backups come in trying to win a job. Cut down day is on Sept. 3 as teams go from 80 to 53 players on the roster so that game tape will decide plenty of players' future.

Here's a roundup of Thursday night's action:

Detroit Lions 16
Buffalo Bills 6

QB Matthew Stafford and Co. are moving to the regular season after an impressive preseason.

Indianapolis Colts 17
Cincinnati Bengals 13

QB Peyton Manning goes through the preseason without taking a snap. QB Kerry Collins' performance on Thursday night wasn't pretty so Indy fans are hoping Manning is ready.

Baltimore Lions 21
Atlanta Falcons

This could be a Super Bowl preview. If it is, the Ravens are champs.

St. Louis Rams 24
Jacksonville Jaguars 17

The Rams have looked decent in preseason and have a shot win the NFC West. Same goes for the Jaguars in the AFC South.

Dallas Cowboys
Miami Dolphins 17

Once again, Cowboys backup QB Stephen McGee looks solid completing 21-of-25 passes. Dolphins QB Matt Moore was sharp, too, competing 9-of-11 passes.

New York Giants 18
New England Patriots 17

This was a battle of backups but the Giants scored 15 fourth quarter points on a fake punt and a fumble return to take the win.

Philadelphia Eagles 24
New York Jets 14

The only problem I have with this game is that it didn't come in the regular season with all the starters playing. Two of the best teams in the NFL here.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24
Washington Redskins 29

We thought QB John Beck had a shot at the Redskins starting QB job but he started the game on Thursday night and QB Rex Grossman sat. Usually, the backup plays and the starter sits.

Pittsburgh Steelers 33
Carolina Panthers 17

The Steelers rested a few key players but QB Cam Newton drove the Panthers down the field, completing 3-of-5 passes including his first touchdown pass to TE Jeremy Shockey.

Cleveland Browns 14
Chicago Bears 24

Most of the Bears starters sat but WR Johnny Knox caught a touchdown pass closing the gap between he and WR Roy Williams.

Kansas City Chiefs 19
Green Bay Packers 20

The Packers first team offense played about a series while the Chiefs played many of their starters into the fourth quarter. The game ended when Chiefs K Ryan Succop couldn't hit a 56-yarder to win it.

Houston Texans 0
Minnesota Vikings 28

Rookie QB Christian Ponder completed 10-of-17 passes for 83 yards but also rushed for 61 yards in a blowout over Houston. He's trying to secure the backup quarterback job behind QB Donovan McNabb.

Tennessee Titans 32
New Orleans Saints 9

Impressive game from rookie QB Jake Locker -- 15-of-17 for 132 yards and a touchdown. Plus three rushes for 39 yards. He won't become the starter this year but he's the future.

Denver Broncos 7
Arizona Cardinals 26

So is it QB Tim Tebow or QB Brady Quinn as the backup? Tebow looked decent completing 7-of-11 passes for 116 yards and a 43-yard touchdown passes. Quinn looked worse completing just 4-of-12 passes for 26 yards and an interception.

San Francisco 49ers 20
San Diego Chargers 17

RB Frank Gore sat in this game after signing his big deal. This was the final preseason game of the night.

Matt Cassel Injury: Chiefs QB Apparently Injures Arm Getting Sacked In 2nd Quarter

The Chiefs' cavalcade of injuries also dealt a blow to their starting signal-caller, Matt Cassel, who was sacked hard by the Packers' Howard Green in the second quarter.

Cassel was shredding the Packers' D — made possible by the fact that their head coach isn't freaking insane — to the tune of 14-16, for 117 yards. Then Howard Green wrapped his paws around him, and slammed him down to the ground on his right shoulder. He was replaced by backup QB Tyler Palko.

Cassel, star running back Jamaal Charles, tight end Tony Moeaki, and Le'Ron McClain have all been hurt tonight, yet head coach Todd Haley insists on being a crazed football version of Dusty Baker:

Oh my word Charles is STILL IN! It's the fourth quarter!!less than a minute ago via Power Twitter Favorite Retweet Reply

Although, other than Moeaki, this may not come back to be too much of an issue, since Charles clearly is healthy enough to play, and the Chiefs are reporting that Cassel wasn't injured, but just got the wind knocked out of him.

Tony Moeaki Injury: TE Leaves Game With Knee Injury

The Kansas City Chiefs took another big hit Thursday night as up-and-coming tight end Tony Moeaki left the team's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers after suffering a knee injury. No details regarding extent of the injury have been disclosed at this time. journalist Dave Richard reports that Moeaki remained in the locker room after the conclusion halftime, presumably getting checked out by team doctors.

After capping a surprising rookie season with 47 catches, 556 yards, and three touchdowns, the Chiefs' headed into the 2011 campaign with grand expectations for their young emerging threat. At six-foot-three, 252 pounds, Moeaki was primed to deliver with a featured role in the offense until Thursday's setback. One would think that Kansas City head coach Todd Haley would have learned his lesson after continually making this exact same mistake in the past.

Jamaal Charles Injury: Chiefs RB Limps Off Field In Second Quarter

Kansas City star running back Jamaal Charles limped off the field midway through the second quarter of the Chief's NFL preseason game against the defending champion Green Bay Packers. The fantasy football stud has not returned since. No details of the injury have been disclosed but reporter Dave Richard indicated that it didn't look serious at this time.

If the damage is as tame as is being reported, then it is likely that Charles' night is done for precautionary reasons.

Needless to say, the decision to have a star running back on the field at all during the second quarter of the fourth preseason game is somewhat dubious. Both fantasy owners and the entire city of Kansas City may have spontaneously combusted had Charles felt the brunt of a serious injury in an utterly meaningless game.

Vince Young Injury: Eagles Backup QB Leaves Game With Leg Injury

After starting the Eagles' final preseason game, Vince Young was seen walking with trainers to the locker room after right hamstring injury just before the end of the first half.

Young pulled up lame on a bootleg with no one around him, prompting the Eagles' training staff to take action. Third-string quarterback Mike Kafka entered the game and will likely finish it out.

Kafka, for what it's worth, has far outperformed Young thus far in the preseason, but Young is a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback who can create with his legs and his arm, and well, is just an entertaining football player in every regard.

Though he won't return to this game, Young should be fine for Week 1, based on how he's reacting on the sideline:

Young is limping, but talking to Vick. Doesn't look too concerned.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Steelers Vs. Panthers: Cam Newton Throws First NFL Touchdown Pass

It only took four games, but Cam Newton finally threw his first NFL touchdown pass. The Carolina Panthers' number-one pick capped off a nine-play, 71-yard drive with a 10-yard laser to newly-acquired tight end, Jeremy Shockey, to tie their NFL preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7-7.

Notable on the drive was a two-play sequence that likely served as a roller coaster of emotion for everyone in the state of Carolina. Newton was brought down hard at midfield by Steelers linebacker Larry Foote after scrambling and throwing an incompletion. On the way down, the rookie's foot appeared to get trapped under Foote's leg, potentially causing an ankle sprain.

Luckily, as the entire Panthers franchise held their collective breath, Newton popped back up and proceeded to scamper for 19-yards on the very next play. According to Bob Pompeani -- Pittsburgh's primary broadcaster -- the brief excursion was longer than any regular-season run by a Panthers' quarterback in team history.

Greg McElroy Injury: Jets Rookie QB's Right Thumb Has 'Small Piece Broken Off'

The New York Jets just got a little more shallow at quarterback, as third-string quarterback, rookie Greg McElroy from Alabama, injured his thumb against the Eagles. He will not return.

Though the Jets are as solid as can be with Mark Sanchez as their starter, veteran backup Mark Brunell hasn't played in a few weeks due to a calf injury. Head coach Rex Ryan has said that Brunell will be ready for the opener, but he's also been quoted as saying he's not worried about Brunell's injury because of McElroy's performance.

Now? It's worry time. Quarterbacks can play through thumb injuries, but, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, this injury's just a little grosser:

BREAKING: Greg McElroy has a dislocated right thumb. Small piece broken off, per source. #nyjless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

The Jets still haven't received the X-Ray results, so if they can feel that a piece has broken off...eeeewwwww.

Tyrod Taylor Injury: Ravens Rookie QB Leaves Preseason Game With Arm Injury

Tyrod Taylor, the Ravens' sixth-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, had been having a phenomenal preseason, enough to earn the second-string quarterback job and the start in the team's fourth and final preseason game. Then things took a turn for the worse for Taylor, as he left the game holding his left arm in discomfort.

He was taken immediately to the locker room, which isn't a good sign for the Ravens. Head coach John Harbaugh and Co. were counting on him being the team's second stringer, and his mobility and surprising accuracy have been on display for three-plus weeks during the preseason.

Now, presumed third-string QB Hunter Cantwell will play almost a full game here, and in doing so, can maybe pass Taylor on the depth chart with a strong performance.

Chances are he won't, but this is good news for Ravens fans. Never like seeing a quarterback hurt his arm.
