The New York Jets just got a little more shallow at quarterback, as third-string quarterback, rookie Greg McElroy from Alabama, injured his thumb against the Eagles. He will not return.
Though the Jets are as solid as can be with Mark Sanchez as their starter, veteran backup Mark Brunell hasn't played in a few weeks due to a calf injury. Head coach Rex Ryan has said that Brunell will be ready for the opener, but he's also been quoted as saying he's not worried about Brunell's injury because of McElroy's performance.
Now? It's worry time. Quarterbacks can play through thumb injuries, but, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, this injury's just a little grosser:
BREAKING: Greg McElroy has a dislocated right thumb. Small piece broken off, per source. #nyj
The Jets still haven't received the X-Ray results, so if they can feel that a piece has broken off...eeeewwwww.
To hear how Jets fans are dealing with the quarterback depth issue, head over to Gang Green Nation and SB Nation New York.
