It's hard to know what to make of either of these teams from an on-field perspective, as neither were very good last year and have undergone a fair amount of change since last year. But with Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh never exactly being the best of friends when they were both in the Pac-10 and now patrolling opposite sidelines, this could be interesting anyway.
This will be Harbaugh's NFL head coaching debut after he led Stanford to a surprising 12-1 record last year. He has entrusted the keys to his offense to former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith, who will have his seventh offensive coordinator in seven seasons.
Carroll is going with relatively unproven Tarvaris Jackson as his starting quarterback. Making his job a little more difficult is the unsettled availability of Sidney Rice, who is dealing with a shoulder injury.
