All eyes were on Tony Romo as he led the Dallas Cowboys to an overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers today. Playing with a cracked rib, Romo completed a 77-yard pass play to wide receiver Jesse Holley to set up the game winning field goal. Fans of football and reality television alike might remember Holley as the winner of Michael Irvin’s "4th and Long."
Holley got his first taste of the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2007. He was released in October, and played in the Canadian Football League in 2008. Then he got his big break.
Taped early in 2009, Michael Irvin’s "4th and Long" pitted six wide receivers against six defensive backs. The winner earned a place at the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp that year.
Holley made it the Cowboys’ practice squad to start the 2010 season, and was added to the 53-man roster later in the year.
Holley’s three catches today were the first regular season receptions of his NFL career. From reality TV to a dramatic overtime reception, what a career already.
You can follow Holley on Twitter at, what else, @Mr4thAndLong. Plenty more on the Cowboys over at Blogging the Boys.
Here’s a clip of Holley talking about his reality TV experience with NBC 4 in San Antonio.
