The Atlanta Falcons announced the release of 17 players on Friday, with several fan favorites and big names getting the axe. Among others, the Falcons released defensive reserve Chauncey Davis, special teamer Coy Wire, DT Trey Lewis, and TE Marquez Branson. Among the 17 cuts, the team reached an injury settlement with WR Andy Strickland who was hurt in Thursday's preseason finale.
The decisions to release Davis and Wire would seem to indicate the Falcons are prepared to go younger along the defensive line and on special teams. Davis in particular would seem to be a bit of a cost-saving maneuver as he was due $3 million this year. The team has some young options that could provide a bit of a spark.
The Falcons cuts follow their decisions to release QB Adam Froman and OL Matt Murphy. This would leave them approximately eight moves from the 53-man limit. They must reach that limit by 6:00pm eastern on Saturday.
