The Minnesota Vikings announced the release of seven players on Friday, which got their roster down to 73 players. The Vikings released returner Jaymar Johnson, RB Tristan Davis, DE David Akinniyi, CB Devon Torrence, safety Ryan Hill and defensive end Stylez G. White. The Johnson release appears to be the most prominent as it would indicate Marcus Sherels has earned the starting punt returner job.
In addition to the seven roster cuts, the Vikings get a bit of a brief roster reprieve for two games as Kevin Williams serves his two game suspension for the StarCaps case. For those two games Williams will not count against the 53-man roster. That buys the Vikings some time if they are still not positive about the status of one or two players. They can give them additional practice and possible game time to decide if a cut is in order.
The moves get the Vikings down to 72 players. They have until 6:00pm eastern on Saturday to cut down to 53 players.
