NFL Roster Cuts: Patriots Cut Sammy Morris

Stay connected with SB Nation

NFL roster cuts are never fun because, like players tell the media after they are released, the NFL is indeed a business. Running that business must be made all the more difficult when teams have to make a decision like the New England Patriots did on Saturday when they cut veteran running back Sammy Morris.

Morris, a utility back who has seen quite a bit of time in the Patriots backfield over the past four seasons despite never being the team's opening day starter, was released on Saturday for what his agent says is the first time in the player's 11-year NFL career.

"In twelve years I've never had this talk with Patriots RB Sammy Morris ... just notified of his release," Morris's agent, Mark Slough, wrote on Twitter. "Sammy is consummate professional and a class act."

SB Nation Boston reports that this might not be the end of the road for Morris, however, citing NESN's Jeff Howe.

"Sammy Morris could be a victim of his proximity. Lives in Foxboro area. Knows offense. Could essentially be 54th player on Pats' roster."

If he's brought back later in the season, good for him, but I'm sure that's not what he's thinking about on the day he was released.
