New York Giants Roster Cuts: Mark Herzlich Makes 53-Man Roster

Stay connected with SB Nation

The New York Giants waived nineteen players and made eight other transactions Saturday afternoon to reach the 53-man roster limit. One of the more notable players to make the roster is undrafted free agent linebacker Mark Herzlich. The success of Herzlich is particularly notable due to his by now well-known cancer survivor story. What's more important on the football field is that he is a solid linebacker who the Giants believe can make a contribution this season.

The Giants are a fairly veteran team with many of their position battles set, which meant somewhat anti-climactic roster cuts on Saturday. However, there were some position battles that went down to the wire, including the punter position between Steve Weatherford and Matt Dodge. Earlier today Dodge indicated he thought the day was "pretty exciting", but unfortunately for Dodge it turned sour as he lost out to Weatherford.

Along with waiver moves, the Giants placed Sage Rosenfels on injured reserve due to strep throat and back problems, leaving David Carr as Eli Manning's primary backup quarterback. The Giants also waived/injured Brian Jackson for his hip injury and terminated six contracts. For more discussion on the Giants roster cuts, head over to Big Blue View's open thread.
