Matt Cassel Injury: Chiefs QB Seems Likely To Play Vs. Bills

Last week in the preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel suffered a rib injury that put his status for Sunday's Week 1 game against the Buffalo Bills in doubt. Though the Chiefs haven't confirmed, the report has Cassel with a cracked rib.

That's largely a pain tolerance issue so you have to think Cassel would play if it were his decision alone. In fact, he's already told reporters that he's going to play in Sunday's game against the Bills. Chiefs coach Todd Haley confirmed Cassel was a full participant at practice on Monday.

Those two things would suggest that Cassel's likely to play on Sunday. The Chiefs will come out with their practice reports on Wednesday and Friday and make a decision on Cassel's status on Friday. I would expect him to be listed probable.

The Chiefs are playing the Bills, who had the league's worst rush defense last year, so even a limited Cassel may not be the worst thing in the world for the Chiefs as they enter the game with last year's No. 1 rushing attack.

Stay tuned to Arrowhead Pride for more on Cassel's status heading into Sunday's game.

Matt Cassel Injury: Cracked Rib Could Keep Quarterback Out Of Season Opener, According To Report

The Kansas City Chiefs are staying mum on quarterback Matt Cassel's status for the season opener against the Buffalo Bills, but multiple reports suggest that he could miss the game. Cassel left the Chiefs' preseason finale after reportedly having the wind knocked out of him.

It now appears that Cassel has suffered a cracked rib that could keep him out of next week's game. The Chiefs would likely turn to Tyler Palko, a fifth-year player, to start if Cassel fails to improve during the week. Palko has bounced around the league since 2007, but he only saw action in the NFL last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star:

A source close to the situation said Chiefs coach Todd Haley told Palko after the game, "You’d better be ready to play Sunday.’’

Rookie quarterback Ricky Stanzi is the other alternative on the roster, but Palko has the advantage of being around the league for several years. Until the extent of Cassel's injury is known, Chiefs fans will be on edge.
