The San Francisco 49ers used a fake field goal in the third quarter to build their lead over the hapless St. Louis Rams. Kicker David Akers connected with wide receiver Michael Crabtree for a 14-yard touchdown on the fake kick. That gave the 49ers a 27-10 lead over the Rams.

San Francisco needs a win to secure a first round bye in the playoffs as the second seed in the NFC. A lead would allow the 49ers to pull some of their starters before the end of the game.
That was Crabtree’s second touchdown of the game. He caught a 28-yard pass from Alex Smith for a second quarter touchdown. Crabtree has 92 yards on nine receptions to go with his two touchdowns.
The Rams lost running back Steven Jackson on the series before the 49ers scored on the fake field goal, making the likely outcome a little more likely.
