Much of the press clipping and accolades bestowed on the New York Giants front seven typically on pass-rushers Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka. Little attention gets paid to the work that defensive tackles Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard and Linval Joseph, but Jorge Castillo of The Star-Ledger writes that their efforts are appreciated inside the locker room.
"We joke about that all the time as far as ‘the defensive ends of the New York Giants,’ " defensive end Dave Tollefson said. "It’s like, ‘Hey, we got D-tackles, too!’ But obviously it’s kind of like an unsung hero type of deal because you could argue that their job is much more important than ours."
Tollefson adds that the defensive tackles have to get sacks, as well. Of the 48 quarterback sacks the Giants recorded in 2011, six were from the defensive tackle position. Canty had four, and was third on the Giants with 11 tackles for a loss, while Joseph added a pair of sacks among his 49 tackles this season.
