Saints Vs. 49ers, 2012 NFL Playoffs: Alex Smith's Fumble Is Niners' First Turnover

Stay connected with SB Nation

The New Orleans Saints have rebounded from a 17-0 deficit in the first half against the San Francisco 49ers, and seem to have most of the momentum in their 2012 NFC Divisional Round game. It would probably be smart for Alex Smith to not start committing turnovers at this point.

Smith fumbled the ball on a scramble late in the second quarter, setting the Saints up in great field position with just 17 seconds left on the clock.

It was the first turnover of the Niners' day, but it capped a half that was full of diminishing returns for San Francisco: after getting 32 and 54 yards on their first two drives, the Niners failed to gain that many yards combined on their next six drives.
