Before firing head coach Jim Caldwell on Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts tried to make inroads with the biggest name in the coaching market this year, Jeff Fisher. According to Jim Thomas at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Colts “reached out” to Fisher before he accepted the job with the St. Louis Rams. He told the Colts that he was not interested.
News that Fisher would take the job in St. Louis leaked out on Friday, Jan. 13. Fisher notified Rams owner Stan Kroenke of his decision the day before that.
If Thomas’ sources are correct, that means the writing was on the wall for Caldwell well ahead of today’s announcement by the Colts.
The Colts interviewed Steve Spagnuolo for their vacant defensive coordinator position on Monday, according to Adam Schefter at ESPN and others. Spagnuolo was fired as the Rams head coach on Jan. 2, after a 2-14 season in his third year with the team. The Colts’ new GM, Ryan Grigson, worked with Spagnuolo in Philadelphia.
