Giants Vs. 49ers, NFC Championship 2012: San Francisco Ahead In All-Time Series History

The San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Giants at Candlestick Park on Sunday in the 2012 NFC Championship Game. The two teams have a long and storied rivalry against one another, particularly in the postseason. The two teams first faced off in 1952. As is to be expected, the Giants usually got the better of the Niners in the formative years of the San Francisco franchise, going 9-2 against their West coast opponents in their first 11 meetings against each other. That all changed, of course, with the advent of the 1980s and the rise of one of the most dominant NFL dynasties of all time.

In recent years, the pendulum has swung back the other way. In the last five meeting between the two teams, the Giants are 3-2 against the 49ers. Those two wins by the 49ers were in very close contests. In 2003, the 49ers came from eight points behind in the fourth quarter of the NFC Wild Card Game to win by a final score of 39-38. In their most recent matchup, in Week 10 of the 2011 season, the Niners needed two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull off an exciting 27-20 win. That win put the 49ers on top in the all-time series between the franchises. San Francisco has 18 wins over the Giants, while New York has just 17 wins against the 49ers.

The two teams have faced off an impressive seven times in the postseason. The 49ers hold the edge in those all-time playoff matchups as well, holding a slim 4-3 lead over the Giants. New York will have an opportunity to even up both the all-time head-to-head record and the postseason head-to-head record with a win on Sunday.
