The New England Patriots were incredibly close to heading into overtime with the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday's AFC Championship game but Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff shanked a 32-yarder in the final seconds of the game. The Patriots beat the Ravens, 23-20.
We started writing a reminder about the new playoff overtime rules but Cundiff made it unnecessary.
The Broncos and Steelers went into overtime earlier this year with the modified sudden death rules but Tim Tebow hit Demaryius Thomas for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play which sealed the game. If Cundiff could have made the kick -- that has to hurt, Ravens fans -- we'd be talking about the new playoff rules.
Unfortunately for Baltimore, the Patriots move onto the 2012 Super Bowl.
