Colts Coaching Search: Conflicting Reports On Jim Tressel

Stay connected with SB Nation

When Tony Dungy suggested that ousted Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel was the leading candidate for the Indianapolis Colts' vacant head coaching job, the news received mixed reviews from the fanbase itself. Now it appears that Tressel's name may be off the table for the position, according local media. Chris Widlic of WISH-TV in Indianapolis tweeted Monday that sources have told him Tressel will not be hired as the Colts' next coach.

Should that rumor hold, the Colts will likely turn towards the NFL coordinator ranks in their search. They are expected to interview current Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, and have reportedly contacted Tennessee Titans DC Jerry Gray and New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.

Tressel joined the Colts staff midway through last season as a gameday consultant. His role in the memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal at Ohio State last year would make him a difficult sell for fans and media wherever he ultimately lands his next coaching gig.
