After the New Orleans Saints stopped the Detroit Lions offense and forced them to punt, the Saints nearly went three and out in their own territory. On third and long, however, Brees was able to connect with Pierre Thomas for an 11-yard pick up to keep the drive alive. A few plays later, Thomas ripped off a 31-yard run right up the middle, making safety Louis Delmas miss in the open field to get the Saints offense past midfield.
Just two plays later Brees dumped the ball off to fullback Jed Collins for a 15-yard gain down the sideline to put the Saints in the redzone as the first quarter ended. After three straight runs, the Saints finally punched the ball in the endzone on a Darren Sproles touchdown run off the left side of the line.
