It all seems so simple on the surface. Since the forward pass was introduced in football, it's always gone ... forward. For most of us, this is intuitive -- the description is in the name, after all.
Phil Simms wants to remind you that for a pass to be a forward pass, it has to go, well, forward.

Also, the pass didn't go forward. It was a backwards pass, which we, in the business, like to call a fumble. That's the thingamabobber that goes backwards and hits the doohickey (ground).
