Derrick Mason Announces His Retirement

Derrick Mason, waived by the Houston Texans in December, announced his retirement on Monday. A fourth-round pick out of Michigan State in 1997, Mason spent 15 years in the NFL. He finished his career with 943 receptions, ranking 11th in NFL history, and 12,061 receiving yards, ranking 19th. He will turn 38 years old on Jan. 17.

From Scout.com:

"I'm done," Mason told Scout in a telephone interview "I won't be playing football. I only knew one play to play football, going all-out and having fun out there.

[...] "That's one thing, I leave it healthy and able to run and walk and not take a half-hour or 45 minutes to get out of bed," Mason said. "I can jump right out of the bed and go. I don't have lingering pains as of now. Me leaving now, even though it didn't happen the way I wanted it to happen, I had a good run. It was fun while it lasted."

Mason spent the first eight years of his career with the Tennessee Titans before moving on to the Baltimore Ravens for six seasons. He opened 2011 with the New York Jets before being traded to the Texans in October. He played in seven games for the Texans but caught just six passes for 55 yards before being released. He appeared in one Super Bowl with the Titans, losing to the Rams in 2000. Now that he's done playing football, Mason indicated that he hopes to get into broadcasting.
