Super Bowl 2016: South Florida, San Francisco finalists

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The race to host the 50th Super Bowl is down to two locations.

Miami and San Francisco are the two finalists to host the Super Bowl in 2015, the 50th iteration, otherwise known as Super Bowl L. The decision was announced by the Super Bowl Advisory Committee Tuesday afternoon, as tweeted by SB Nation's Ryan Van Bibber, who was on site.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora further explained the selection details:

The site that is not selected to host in 2016 will be competing with Houston's Reliant Stadium to host the game in 2017. The other cities making bids to host Super Bowl L were New Orleans and Tampa.

Miami's Sun Life Stadium has hosted five Super Bowls since it opened in 1987, most recently in 2010. It will host the 2013 BCS championship game.

If San Francisco is chosen as the host site, the game will be held at the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara, scheduled to open in time for the 2014 NFL season. The Bay Area has not hosted a Super Bowl since 1985, when the 49ers defeated the Dolphins at Stanford Stadium in Super Bowl XIX.

NFL owners will make a final decision on the 2016 Super Bowl at their spring meeting.
