Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was never entirely on board with Juan Castillo as the defensive coordinator.

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced the firing of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. On Wednesday, it's been found out that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie wasn't exactly sold on the hire when it was made in 2011.

According to philly.com, Lurie wasn't going to get in head coach Andy Reid's way when he decided to promote Castillo but certainly was unsure about the idea.

When asked if he had reservations, Lurie didn't mince words:

"Yes I did," Lurie said. "But I let Andy make that call. I respected his decision. He felt it was the best thing to do at the time, and I don't interfere in that area."

However, the long-time owner says he has no intentions of being more involved in future coaching staff matters.

"I will never do that,'' Lurie stated. "The way I operate, a coach is responsible for his staff. [He needs to] succeed or fail based on who he chooses and his own performance. I don't trigger that.''

As for Reid, he didn't attempt to hide from the fact that he was ultimately responsible for the failings of Castillo in some ways.

"I put Juan in this situation and things didn't work out the way I had hoped,'' Reid said. "I take full responsibility for that. I take full responsibility for putting him in that situation.

"On the other hand, if I don't think things are working for the best for the organization, I've got to be responsible for that, too.''

The Eagles have a bye week to straighten things out before playing the undefeated Atlanta Falcons.
