The New England Patriots looked destined to lose after blowing another double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and falling behind by a field goal with under two minutes to go, but Stephen Gostkowski nailed a pair of field goals to give his team the 29-26 win.
The Pats had struggled to win close games on the season - Bill Belichick's squad had lost three games, none by more than a field goal - but eked out a win to put them on top of the AFC East at 4-3. They looked ready to do that again Sunday, but as Patriots blogger Greg Knopping writes in his postgame recap at Pats Pulpit, the team turned the tables and got the win.
It was all too familiar and a theme of the season. There was a collective sinking feeling across Patriot nation as Devin McCourty fumbled a kick-off with the score tied and just over two minutes left in the game.
But from that point on, the Patriots finally played like the Patriots we're used to seeing in the fourth quarter of games
Of course, there was a lot to be disappointed with for Patriots fans, who were concerned that their team again allowed their opponent back into the game in the first place.
The Patriots weren't sharp in any phase today, they surrendered another late lead, didn't look as emotionally invested as the Jets - yet came through with the clutch win that they needed.
Tom Brady and the Pats offense didn't have their best day - only 14 points came off of offensive touchdowns, on a pair of passes to Rob Gronkowski - but McCourty ran back a kickoff for a touchdown, the team forced a safety, and Gostkowski nailed his two field goal attempts.
