After the 49ers trounced the Cardinals on Monday Night Football, QB Alex Smith's confidence was (once again) questioned. But Jim Harbaugh thought it was just a bunch of "gobble gobble turkey."
On Monday night, Alex Smith went 18-for-19 with 232 yards and three touchdowns as the 49ers rolled through the Cardinals, 24-3. And really it wasn't even that close. Despite those numbers, the talk after the game was still about Smith's confidence. Or a lack thereof.
On Friday, Sports Illustrated's Jim Trotter wrote that after Thursday's game -- a win over the Seahawks -- that is was "obvious the 49ers coaching staff didn't trust Smith to make a play ... It will say otherwise in the days and weeks to come, just as coach Jim Harbaugh did Thursday night."
Fast-forward to Monday's post-game press conference, where Smith's confidence was again questioned. But head coach Jim Harbaugh was having none of it (video at NFL.com).
Reporter: Do you think [Smith's] performance tonight maybe put any confidence issues to rest?
Harbaugh: I don't think there was ever a question there. I think it's just a lot of gobble gobble turkey.
R: What is gobble, gobble turkey?
H: Just gobble, gobble, gobble turkey from jive turkey gobblers ... that paints a pretty good picture. He's a very confident guy.
That settles that.
