Cardinals Vs. Rams, Week 5: 'So this is what winning feels like'

The St. Louis Rams already have their third win of the year after winning only two in 2011, leaving their fans pleasantly surprised with a winning team -- something that hasn't been too common in St. Louis of late.

Ryan Van Bibber at Rams blog Turf Show Times noted that his team hasn't been above .500 at any point in any season since 2006.

That was the same year we hung out our shingle here at Turf Show Times, and I can honestly say that since that time, I have never seen a Rams team like this one.

The Rams held the previously-undefeated Arizona Cardinals to only a field goal Thursday night in St. Louis, winning 17-3 despite a sub-par offensive performance. The stars of the show were Robert Quinn and Chris Long, the team's top two defensive ends:

The defensive line terrorized Kevin Kolb, sacking him nine times ... nine times. ... Both ends got around the woeful Arizona offensive tackles as if they weren't even there. Had the refs bothered to call the holding on them, who knows what might have happened.

Sam Bradford only went 7-for-21 on the night, but it was more than enough with the pounding administered to the Cardinals offensive unit.

Next up for St. Louis is a trip to Miami to play the 1-3 Dolphins, with a few extra days of rest thanks to this week's Thursday night game.

Cardinals vs. Rams, Week 5: 'We're still 4-1'

The Arizona Cardinals are off to a better start to the season than many expected, but the team's 17-3 loss Thursday night to the St. Louis Rams was a disappointing effort from a team that has shown it can do better in the early going.

The obvious problem for the Cardinals was an inability to do anything with the football, only scoring three points. That problem started in the trenches, as Cardinals blog Revenge of the Birds elaborates:

It was a bad night for the offense. And that's putting it in kind terms... But what was an even bigger story (and not in a good way) for the Cardinals was the atrocious play of the Offensive Line. Kolb was sacked a total of 9 times, totaling in a loss of 52 yards. Linemen Bobby Massie and D'Anthony Batiste were abused all night. This affected the run-game as well, as RB Ryan Williams was only able to garner 33 yards off 14 rushes.

The defense held Sam Bradford to 7-for-21 passing, but two of those completions were for over 40 yards, one of which set up a score, and one of which was a 51-yard strike to Chris Givens that sealed the deal.

While the loss is surely disappointing, not many Cardinals supporters would have put the team at 4-1 after five games. Although the loss was a dismal effort to a St. Louis team not expected to be amongst the league's best, things have still gone well for Arizona thus far this season. Revenge of the Birds agreed, as the blog's front page notes, "it was a good streak while it lasted."
