Ravens Vs. Chiefs, Week 5: Kansas City fans discuss cheering Matt Cassel's injury

The Kansas City Chiefs narrowly lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 9-6, at home on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The game was characterized by Matt Cassel's turnovers and Chiefs fans apparently cheering when the quarterback went down with an injury late in the fourth quarter.

To that point, Cassel was 9-for-15 for 92 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble. The Chiefs defense had held a dangerous Ravens passing attack under control, yet the offense had squandered several chances in the game to take the lead. With fans clamoring for backup Brady Quinn nearly all season, the stands at Arrowhead apparently lit up with cheers when he went down with a head injury late in the game.

The cheering by the home crowd has created some controversy among Chiefs fans as to what exactly was being cheered and whether that cheering was justified.

Arrowhead Pride reader Chief-blinders-on says the fans weren't cheering the injury, but that a quarterback change would now be forced upon the team:

Matt Cassel has been forced down our throat for four seasons. It seemed as if an injury would be the only way we might field a legitimate QB to win...

That's why people were cheering, they knew that was the only dam way that Matt wouldn't be on the field with a hole in his pants from Scott Pioli's extended puppet arm. It was a momentary relief.

Sure, some people wanted Matt to feel pain. Perhaps as a counter balance to all of the pain and mental anguish Matt has caused us over the last four years of average play.

Brady Quinn was 3-of-3 for 32 yards late in the game, leading a field goal drive in the final minutes of the game to pull the Chiefs to within 9-6. The Ravens would successfully run out the clock on the next drive.

There are no current updates on Cassel's status for next week's game against Tampa Bay.
